Hot Reads for Cold Nights - With winter official here now is a good time to curl up with a good book and a cup of hot chocolate. To get you started, the Tawas City Friends of the Library are having it's 6th annual "Hot Reads for Cold Nights", Jan. 7th through March 30th. Stop by the Tawas City Library and pick up a bookshelf bingo game sheet and enter the contest. Keep track of your reading and fill in the game sheet with your book titles in the appropriate squares. Turn in your completed game sheet for an entry to the contest, multiple entries are encouraged. Weekly drawings will be held to win gift certificates to local businesses. Adopt A Pet - The Oscoda Kmart and Iosco County Humane Society will be holding an Adopt A Pet, Saturday, March 23rd from 1pm to 3pm. The shelter will be bringing some furry friends looking for their furever homes. This event is to bring awareness into the community and to open your hearts or home to pets that need supplies or a furever home. If you can't adopt a pet donations of any type would be appreciated. Enter for a chance to win one of two $25 gift cards being given away to anyone that brings in a donation or adopts a pet? Iosco Arenac District Library - The Robert J. Parks Library in Oscoda will be holding a Spring Break Staycation show featuring Joel Tacey Comedy Show. The show will take place on March 26th, at 2pm at the library. The funny man will entertain with wacky stunts, astounding magic, and tons of laughs; plus Joel always needs help from the audience. Klondike Canoe Race - The Klondike Challenge has become an AuSable River Canoe Marathon fundraising event, incorporating a 5K/10K Run/Walk into the weekend’s festivities,
Saturday, April 6, 2019. $5 per paddler, with registration from 11am to 12:45pm at Chemical Bank in Oscoda. The C-2 event starts at 1:00 p.m., C-1 event starts after C-2’s are underway. Then on Sunday, April 7, 2019, 5K & 10K events start at 1:00 p.m., with registration from 11:00 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. across from the Van Etten Lake State Forest Campground. The event is organized by the AuSable River International Canoe Marathon Committee, and hosted in conjunction with the Michigan Canoe Racing Association. Paddlers and runners of all ages and talent levels are welcome to enter. Paul Bunyan Comedy Show - The Paul Bunyan Comedy Festival comes back to the Hilltop Bar & Grill in Oscoda, MI April 11 to 13, 2019. It’s the festival’s 2nd year & will celebrate stand-up comedy with 30+ comedians from across North America. The festival will feature a variety of comedy showcases ranging from family-friendly to not so family-friendly, as well as a story-telling show & roast battle. We have 8 showcases with our festival comedians coming to the Hilltop this year:

The locals only open-mic where area residents can try their hand at stand-up will be held Fri April 12th at 11pm. This will also be free (donations welcome).
Tickets are $10 online or at the Hilltop in advance (or $15 night of each show). Proceeds go to the Alzheimer’s Association

Lake Huron Sink Holes - Sunrise Side Lifelong Learning will be kicking off their 7th year with a presentation on "Lake Huron Sinkholes" with researcher Steve Ruberg. The discoveries were made in 2001 by the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary with Steve being the leader in the exploration of the sinkholes. In an inland fresh water sea, the sinkholes have conditions as harsh and harbor microorganisms as unusual as Antarctica's permanently frozen lakes and deep sea hydrothermal vents. This presentation will be held Thursday, April 18th, at the Knights of Columbus Rushman Hall in East Tawas from 6pm to 8pm. This is open and free to the public. There will also be raffles for various themed baskets.
Market Day - Shore Line Players of Oscoda will be holding Market Day, Apr. 20th, at the theater from 10am to 5pm. Stop by and see what's "in store" at the theater. Vendors vary every month.
Iosco Conservation District - Reforestation Tree Sale Fundraiser will be held Friday, April 26th, Saturday, April 27th, and Sunday, April 28th. Times are Friday, and Saturday from 9am to 5pm, and Sunday from 11am to 3pm. Seedlings, Transplants, Shrubs, Small Fruit Plants and Fruit Trees are available. Order placed by Friday, Feb. 15th will get a 5% discount, with orders due by Monday, April 1st. A limited supply of excess trees will be available on site on the days of the sale. Breakfast With The Easter Bunny - Quota of Iosco County and Huron Community Bank will be hosting the 2nd Annual Breakfast with the Easter Bunny, Saturday, April 13th at Tawas United Methodist Church from 9am to 11am. Tawas Point Birding Festival - "The Biggest Little Birding Festical in the Midwest" May 16th thru May 18th, 2019. Come to Michigan’s Sunrise Coast to enjoy spring birding at its best, attend birding walks and tours, brush up on your bird identification skills, and support conservation efforts in the state of Michigan! The Tawas Point Birding Festival is a Michigan Audubon Signature Event that is supported by the local chapter, AuSable Valley Audubon.
Festival participants enjoy some of the best birding in the Great Lakes region; Tawas Point is well known for high concentrations of migrating warblers during the month of May. Species highlights have included Kirtland’s Warbler, Cape May Warbler, Golden-winged Warbler, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, White-crowned Sparrow, numerous raptors, shorebirds, and more. Over 160 species were recorded during the festival weekend in 2016.
The 2019 festival will include guided tours of local hotspots, a birding 101 workshop, bird identification workshops, and opportunities for birders to network and socialize. Festival headquarters will be at the Tawas Bay Beach Resort, 300 E Bay St, East Tawas. Tours will either begin here or at Tawas Point State Park, 686 Tawas Beach Rd, East Tawas.
Shoreline Arts & Crafts Show - The 27th Annual Shoreline Arts & Crafts Show will be held at the Tawas Shoreline Park, Saturday, May 25th from 10am to 5pm, and Sunday, May 26th from 10am to 4pm. Some come and check out all of the vendors, and enjoy the bay.
